Musicians from the Royal Court Orchestra perform\, and of course Johann Gottlieb Graun\, who played music with Frederick when he was still crown prince\, is concertmaster for the special occasion. Works by Germany’s most gifted composers are being performed and didn’t the late Johann Sebastian Bach once consecrate a “musical offering” to the king\, in which he transformed a theme given to him by Frederick to all the rules of his art? With Georg Philipp Telemann\, the flair of the big wide world comes from the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. But music isn’t everything: there’s dancing\, laughing and playing\, as befits a royal party. And Frederick’s revered flute master and musical father figure Johann Joachim Quantz leads the celebrations as maître de plaisir. \nApollo’s Cabinet has won 1st Prize in the Utrecht Van Wassenaer Concours\, 1st prize at the Royal Overseas League Ensemble Competition\, 1st prize at the Musikfestspiele Potsdam lunchtime concert competition as well as 1st prize and audience prize of the SMADE Musica Antigua Estella competition with this programme. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n“Making Music is the UK’s leading organisation for leisure-time music\, with over 3\,500 music groups in membership. SUMMARY:Fenella Humphreys & Antonio Oyarzábal VIOLIN & PIANO
DESCRIPTION:Ravel’s World\n7th March 2025 marks the 50th birthday of the extraordinary French composer and teacher\, Maurice Ravel. This intriguing programme places music by Ravel alongside that of his teacher\, Gabriel Fauré and students Germaine Tailleferre and Ralph Vaughan Williams. There will also be music by Lili Boulanger and Dutch composer\, Rosy Wertheim who lived in Paris in the 1920s. Faversham Music Club regular\, Fenella Humphreys\, returns with pianist Antonio Oyarzábal. \nPROGRAMME\nRalph Vaughan Williams – Romance\nRosy Wertheim – Sonata\nLili Boulanger – Nocturne\nMaurice Ravel – Berceuse sur le nom de Gabriel Fauré\nGabriel Fauré – Berceuse op 16\nGermaine Tailleferre – Sonatine\nMaurice Ravel – Sonata no. 2\n  \nFenella Humphreys\, winner of the 2023 BBC Music Magazine Premiere Recording Award\, has attracted critical admiration and audience acclaim with the grace and intensity of her remarkable performances. With her playing described in the press as “alluring”\, “unforgettable” and “a wonder”\, Fenella is one of the UK’s most established and versatile violinists\, having also won the 2018 BBC Music Magazine Instrumental Award. She enjoys a busy career combining chamber music with solo work\, performing in the most prestigious venues around the world and is frequently broadcast on the BBC\, Classic FM\, Scala Radio and international radio stations. \nFenella performs widely as a soloist. Her recent album of Sibelius’ solo works with BBC National Orchestra of Wales and George Vass has been featured in BBC Radio 3’s Building a Library\, Gramophone Magazine’s Guide to the Concerto\, and was Album of the Week on Scala Radio. BBC Music Magazine has written of the recording: “it takes an unusually fine artist to be able to bridge the two extremes. Fenella Humphreys’s playing is a genuine revelation in the way it brings out the music’s dark and introspective qualities\, with no shortage of technical panache meanwhile.” \nMost recently her recording of Adrian Sutton’s Violin Concerto has been released on Chandos with Michael Seal and BBC Phil. The work was written for Fenella in 2023\, and premiered with the RPO at London’s Southbank Centre. “Humphreys\, Seal and the BBC Philharmonic have its [Violin Concerto] linguistic number. Humphreys brings her endlessly unfurling violin lines taut\, silvery weightlessness. The recording beautifully captures her duets with woodwind\, and a tremendous dynamic range…” (The Strad) \nAntonio Oyarzabal was born in Bilbao in 1989. He started studying piano with Sor Cecilia Keller and continued with Guadalupe López completing high school with honors and obtaining the highest grade in piano. Later\, he entered in Musikene\, in San Sebastian. At this school he obtained his bachelor degree under the pianists Marta Zabaleta and Miguel Borges\, and trained in contemporary piano repertoire with Ricardo Descalzo. Antonio also completed a harpsichord Diploma degree wit Honors\, training with Loreto F. Imaz. He assiduously received lessons from pianist Denis Pascal and the Armenian master Anahit Simonian\, with whom he worked on piano improvisation. \nAntonio has recorded three albums. All have received the Golden Melomano Award from Melomano Magazine and very positive reviews. The last one\, La Muse Oubliée\, was recorded with Ibs Classical record label and features piano works written by women. It has received a 5 star rating from BBC Magazine as well as highly positive reviews from The Observer and other magazines. It has also been featured on radios such as Classic FM\, BBC Radio 3\, National Radio of Israel\, Radio Nacional (Spain) etc. It has recently been chosen as 1 of the best 5 piano albums of 2021 by Fanfare Magazine (US). Because of his work in the field of women composers\, Antonio has been named Ambassador of Donne.uk \n

SUMMARY:David Chadwick & Marit Fält - Nyckelharpa & Mandola
DESCRIPTION:David Chadwick is normally found performing on the violin as a member of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House\, Covent Garden\, having previously held positions with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. With these ensembles (as well as the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields\, the Royal Northern Sinfonia and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra)\, he has toured around Europe\, the USA and South America\, Australia and east Asia.\n\n\n\nHis interest in the nyckelharpa began after working on a project with Shetland fiddle and Scottish harp duo\, Chris Stout and Catriona McKay. At the time\, Catriona had just recorded an album with one of Sweden’s very best nyckelharpa players\, Olov Johansson\, and it wasn’t long before curiosity got the better of David and he was diving into the traditional music of Sweden. Since then he has taken lessons with Olov Johansson\, Josefina Paulson\, Magnus Holmström\, Torbjörn Näsbom Peter ‘Puma’ Hedlund and Emilia Amper – all recipients of the prestigious ‘Riksspelman’ honour and carriers of the tradition in Sweden.\n\n\nThe nyckelharpa\, or keyed fiddle\, is a bowed string instrument with 16 strings (12 of which are ‘sympathetic’ strings) and 37 keys. Images of the instrument can be found throughout central Europe from the fifteenth century\, even earlier in Sweden. In fact\, it is thanks to the Swedes than the nyckelharpa survives to this day – elsewhere in Europe\, the instrument declined in use to the point of extinction\, the only remaining unbroken tradition of playing was in Sweden.\n\n\nMarit Fält is a multiinstrumentalist brought up in Norway of Swedish parentage. Growing up playing Swedish traditional music on the fiddle\, she is perhaps best known as a Låtmandola player and is a leading proponent of using plucked instruments in a range of ways – equally as comfortable to lead as to accompany. Having graduated from Newcastle University with the highest performance mark ever achieved\, she has toured internationally with a range of artists. Most known for her duo with Rona Wilkie\, she is also gaining a reputation for her work as a composer – she has composed a soundtrack with Rona for BAFTA nominated documentary Sixteen Years till Summer\, and premiered her New Voices commission Irrationalities in Celtic Connections 2020. Recently she released the Gaelic Christmas EP ‘Nollaig’ with Rona and 2022 will see her release albums with trio LYRE LYRE and her debut solo album.
