Tim Rumsey is a tenacious, dynamic young artist with a passion for a wide variety of music.  He is an experienced concert soloist and ensemble performer delighting audiences both large and small, having played at venues including the Wigmore Hall, Chichester Cathedral and the V&A Museum.

Recent performances include a concerto appearance playing Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto with the Chichester Symphony Orchestra in Chichester Cathedral, and solo recitals at the the Pitville Pump Room in Cheltenham, Charlton House and the University Church, Oxford.  In addition to being a competent soloist, Tim is a keen and versatile accompanist, duo partner and chamber musician, regularly performing with friends and collaborating with string and wind players in particular.  Recent performances include works such as the two Ravel Violin Sonatas, Clara Schumann Romances for Violin and Piano and works for trio by Khachaturian, Arutiunian and Milhaud.

More recently, Tim has enjoyed making piano transcriptions for himself to play in concert with works such as Paul Dukas’ ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’, William Walton’s Orb and Sceptre, and fantasy variations on ‘Shall We Dance?’, the latter being an outlet for his interest in jazz.  Tim’s arrangement of George Gershwin’s ‘An American in Paris’ for violin, clarinet and piano has also been performed numerous times in concerts around London. Tim finds time for composing as well as arranging, and likes to write in a modern, post-impressionist classical style as well as composing jazz-influenced works which he often performs himself at the keyboard.

An equal passion for jazz piano is something that Tim greatly enjoys, and he finds it especially liberating being able to improvise freely at the piano.  Improvisation is a big part of his musical life in both classical and jazz styles, and he has recently taken part as a Masterclass Student in the Pordenone Silent Film Festival in Italy, which included performing a feature length silent film in the Teatro Verdi concert hall.

Teaching also takes up lots of his time, both privately and in schools, which he enjoys greatly and finds extremely fulfilling.  Tim teaches at the prestigious St. Catherine’s school in Bramley, as well as teaching and accompanying at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music and with the Barnet Education Arts Trust.

Tim has played as a ballet pianist at the ABC Ballet School in London for over five years, and has more recently played at the English National Ballet School, filling in for the Intensive Summer Courses.

Tim’s interest in music unsurprisingly started at a young age, and he progressed from having music lessons locally to studying at the Junior Department at the Royal Academy of Music age 13.  He went on to study at the Academy full time in 2017, completing his Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours in July 2021, studying with Carole Presland.  Being the Wisniewski/Derwent scholar for his Master of Arts degree under the guidance of his professor Colin Stone from 2021-23, Tim has recently graduated with the the additional award of Diploma of the Royal Academy of Music (DipRAM) due to his high performance and attainment.  Tim also gained the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music teaching qualification in the Summer of 2021.
